A new serum on Monday. A different cleanser by Thursday. A “holy grail” cream after one Instagram reel. If this is your pattern, acne isn’t ignoring you — biology simply hasn’t had time to answer. Follicular turnover, inflammation settling, and barrier repair run on multi-week clocks.
Skin doesn’t A/B test at influencer speed
Most topical acne strategies need consistent use for several weeks before you can judge them fairly. Early dryness or a few new lesions can be adjustment — or irritation — but you can’t tell if you change everything at once. Product-hopping destroys the only data you have: your own face under controlled conditions.
What looks like “not working” is often incomplete use
- Using an active three nights, then quitting.
- Skipping moisturiser and blaming the treatment for tightness.
- No SPF, then panicking about marks.
- Layering five new actives the same week.
A better evaluation protocol
Change one variable. Keep cleanse / moisturise / SPF stable. Add one treatment. Take weekly photos in the same light. Reassess at 4–8 weeks unless you have true allergy, severe irritation, or rapidly worsening cystic acne (see a clinician).
Purging vs irritation — briefly
Some actives can accelerate the surfacing of microcomedones already forming. That “purge” should be temporary and mostly in usual breakout zones. Widespread burning, cracked skin, and swelling point to irritation — stop and repair. Delivery systems can influence tolerability; see why delivery matters.
Where project SKIN fits
project SKIN builds formulas for acne-prone Indian skin: calm cleansing, measured actives, barrier support, and daily SPF — not a new miracle every week. Explore our acne literacy pages, the ingredient library, or start with a steady routine like the 4-step kit. We design routines to be finished — not endlessly replaced. Start simple with the 4-step kit and give it a fair window.
