Words we use on purpose

Short definitions for the biology behind the formulas — so mechanism language never feels like jargon for jargon’s sake.

Barrier

The skin’s protective lipid layer. When compromised, products absorb poorly and irritation rises — cream alone cannot fix a broken barrier.

Sebum

The skin’s natural oil. Excess production can clog pores; the goal is balance, not stripping oil away entirely.

PIH

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — dark marks left after acne inflammation. Needs melanin regulation and UV protection, not more harsh actives alone.

Melasma

Hormonal and UV-driven pigmentation. Daily broad-spectrum protection matters as much as brightening actives.

BHA

Beta hydroxy acid (typically salicylic acid). Oil-soluble, so it can work inside the pore to clear congestion.

AHA

Alpha hydroxy acid (e.g. glycolic acid). Water-soluble surface exfoliation that supports smoother-looking texture.

Encapsulation

A delivery approach that protects actives until application — improving stability and releasing fresher efficacy when you use the product.

Non-comedogenic

Formulated to be less likely to clog pores — essential for acne-prone routines that still need moisture and SPF.

PA++++

A UVA protection rating used widely in Asia. More + signs indicate stronger UVA defence alongside SPF for UVB.

Acid mantle

The skin’s slightly acidic surface film that helps defend against microbes. High humidity and harsh cleansers can disrupt it.

TEWL

Transepidermal water loss — moisture escaping through the skin. Spikes in dry winters when the barrier is under stress.

Humectant

An ingredient that attracts and holds water in the skin (e.g. glycerin, saccharide isomerate).

Emollient

An ingredient that softens and smooths by filling gaps in the surface — cushion without necessarily feeling greasy.

Photostable

A UV filter that holds up under sunlight instead of breaking down quickly — critical for real-world daytime wear.

Efficacious concentration

A dose chosen because it can do the job — not a decorative sprinkle for the label.
