Types of Acne: How to Tell What You’re Dealing With

Types of acne — project SKIN Journal

Calling everything a “pimple” hides useful information. Different lesion types imply different depths of inflammation and different urgency. You don’t need to self-diagnose like a dermatologist — but a clearer vocabulary helps you choose gentler home care and know when to escalate.

Comedones (blackheads and whiteheads)

Non-inflamed plugs. Closed comedones look like small flesh-coloured bumps; open comedones (blackheads) oxidise at the surface. Pore-clearing strategies such as salicylic acid are often relevant here, with patience.

Papules and pustules

Inflamed lesions. Papules are red raised bumps without obvious pus; pustules have a visible white/yellow centre. These respond to consistent anti-acne routines and careful hands-off healing. Picking raises PIH risk.

Nodules and cysts

Deeper, painful, longer-lasting. Higher scarring risk. Home actives alone are often insufficient — see a dermatologist. Delaying medical care to “try one more viral product” is how scars get permanent.

Fungal acne (malassezia folliculitis) — the lookalike

Itchy, uniform small bumps, often on chest/back/hairline, can be mislabelled as bacterial acne. It needs a different approach. If standard acne actives repeatedly fail and itch dominates, get a professional opinion.

Acne vs PIH vs scars

Flat dark marks after lesions are often PIH. True scars change texture (ice-pick, boxcar, rolling). Prevention (don’t pick; treat early) beats later correction.

What to do with the map

  • Mostly comedones → focus on gentle cleanse + BHA-style care + moisturiser + SPF.
  • Mostly inflammatory → add consistent leave-on actives; avoid aggression.
  • Nodulocystic → clinic pathway.
  • Unsure → photograph and consult; don’t stack five acids while you guess.

Where project SKIN fits

project SKIN builds formulas for acne-prone Indian skin: calm cleansing, measured actives, barrier support, and daily SPF — not a new miracle every week. Explore our acne literacy pages, the ingredient library, or start with a steady routine like the 4-step kit. For everyday acne-prone skin, a coherent set — cleanser, serum, Active Boba, moisturiser, SPF — beats random single-product hunting.
