The FDA just approved a sunscreen filter India has used for twenty years

Bemotrizinol is being called the biggest change to American sunscreen since 1999. Here is what it actually does at the molecular level — and why the more interesting story, if you buy sunscreen in India, is the one nobody is telling.

In June 2026, the US Food and Drug Administration did something it had not done since the Clinton administration: it added a new active ingredient to the over-the-counter sunscreen monograph. The ingredient is bemotrizinol. American dermatologists called it a landmark. American formulators called it overdue.

In India, the reaction among people who read ingredient lists was different, and quieter: we have had this for years.

Both reactions are correct. Understanding why is the fastest route to understanding what actually separates a well-built sunscreen from a poorly built one — which is a more useful skill than memorising any single ingredient name.

Definition
Bemotrizinol is a broad-spectrum organic UV filter that absorbs both UVB and UVA radiation across roughly 280–400 nm, with absorption peaks near 310 nm and 340 nm. It is highly photostable, shows very low absorption into the bloodstream, and is sold under the trade names Tinosorb S and Parsol Shield. Its INCI name is bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine.

What the FDA actually approved

The FDA recognised bemotrizinol as GRASE — generally recognised as safe and effective — for adults and children over six months of age, at concentrations up to 6%. The order took effect on 9 August 2026, which is the date from which US products could legally contain it.

It is the first new sunscreen active added to the American monograph since 1999. That gap is not a story about safety. It is a story about paperwork.

Sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug in the United States, so a new filter has to clear a drug-approval pathway rather than a cosmetic-ingredient pathway. In the European Union, India, Australia and most of Asia, sunscreen is regulated as a cosmetic, and new filters are assessed and listed on a far shorter cycle. Same molecule, same safety dossier, radically different queue.

Bemotrizinol has been permitted in the EU since 2000. It has been sitting in Indian sunscreens, legally, for two decades.

The mechanism: why this molecule is unusual

Most organic UV filters are narrow specialists. One covers UVB, another covers part of UVA, and a formulator combines four or five to cover the full range. Bemotrizinol is one of the rare filters that covers nearly the whole spectrum on its own, with two absorption peaks — one in UVB territory around 310 nm, one deep in UVA around 340 nm.

Three properties make it a formulator's favourite:

It does not break down in sunlight

Photostability is the property nobody markets and everybody should ask about. A filter that degrades under UV stops protecting you partway through the afternoon, and the SPF on the bottle stops describing the product on your face. Bemotrizinol is exceptionally photostable. It is stable enough that formulators use it to stabilise other filters — most notably avobenzone, which degrades significantly within an hour of sun exposure unless it is propped up.

It largely stays on the skin

Bemotrizinol is a large molecule with very low systemic absorption. This is the property that drove much of the American enthusiasm, because the FDA's 2019–2020 studies found that several older filters — oxybenzone among them — were absorbed into the bloodstream at levels that triggered requests for more data.

It is well tolerated

This one has a track record of being less irritating than other chemical filters.

Coverage ranges are approximate and describe each filter's absorbance profile, not its contribution to a finished SPF value. UVA1 — the longest, deepest-penetrating wavelengths — is the band most closely associated with tanning, pigmentation and photoageing.

The part that matters for Indian skin: UVA1

UVB burns. UVA1 does something slower and, for most Indian skin, more consequential: it drives tanning, it aggravates melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and it penetrates deeply enough to degrade collagen over years. It is also present at roughly constant intensity through the day, through winter, and through window glass.

Here is the structural problem American sunscreen has had. Until bemotrizinol arrived, avobenzone was the only strong UVA1 filter available in the United States — capped at 3%, and photo-unstable, which is why American formulas lean so heavily on octocrylene to hold it together.

The filters that solved this problem elsewhere — bisoctrizole, DHHB, ethylhexyl triazone, the Mexoryl family — are still not on the US monograph. Bemotrizinol's approval closes part of that gap. It does not close all of it.

Indian standard IS 4707 (Part 4) is aligned to the EU cosmetic ingredient list, which is why the permitted cap here matches Europe's rather than America's.

Read that table again. India permits bemotrizinol at nearly double the American cap, and has done so for about twenty years. The country with the weaker sunscreen regulation, on this specific point, was not India.

So how do you tell whether your sunscreen is any good?

The honest answer is that bemotrizinol is not a magic word, and a product is not automatically excellent because it appears on the label. Plenty of Indian brands have used it for years — that is the point of this article, not a complaint about it. What separates a strong formula from a weak one is the system: which filters, in what combination, at a texture you will actually reapply.

Four things worth checking on any bottle you own right now:

  1. 280–400
    Look for genuine UVA1 cover, not just SPF. SPF is a UVB measurement. It tells you almost nothing about pigmentation risk. In India, look for the PA rating — PA++++ is the highest — or for named UVA1 filters like DHHB (Uvinul A Plus) or bemotrizinol.
  2. STABILITY
    Check what is holding the formula up. If avobenzone is the only UVA filter and there is no photostabiliser alongside it, protection fades faster than the label implies.
  3. COUNT
    More filters, better distributed, beats one filter at a high percentage. Modern formulas layer three to five filters so each covers what the others miss.
  4. TEXTURE
    The best sunscreen is the one you will wear in 34°C humidity. A formula that pills under a mask, stings, or triggers congestion is a formula that ends up in a drawer. This is not a soft consideration — it is the single biggest predictor of whether you are actually protected.
A note on where we stand

Three of those four filters are still not permitted in US sunscreens. We mention it not as a boast but as the clearest illustration of the point above: the regulatory ceiling you formulate under shapes what you are able to build.

What changes from here

For American consumers, quite a lot: over the next few years, US sunscreen should start closing the UVA gap that has defined it for a generation. For Indian consumers, far less than the headlines suggest — the filter was already here.

What genuinely changes is the conversation. A filter that spent two decades as an obscure INCI string now has a name people recognise, which makes it easier to talk about the thing that actually matters: not brand claims, but the wavelengths a formula covers and whether it holds up in the sun.

Common questions

Is bemotrizinol safe?

Regulators in the EU, India, Australia and now the US have all assessed it as safe at their permitted concentrations. The FDA classified it as generally recognised as safe and effective for adults and children over six months. It has very low systemic absorption and a twenty-plus year record of use across Europe and Asia.

Is bemotrizinol the same as Tinosorb S?

Yes. Bemotrizinol is the generic name; Tinosorb S (BASF) and Parsol Shield (dsm-firmenich) are trade names for the same molecule. On an ingredient list it appears by its INCI name, bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine.

Is it a chemical or a mineral sunscreen filter?

Chemical — more precisely, organic. Unlike zinc oxide and titanium dioxide it leaves no white cast, which is why it is common in formulas made for deeper skin tones.

Can I already buy sunscreen with bemotrizinol in India?

Yes, and you have been able to for years. Several Indian brands formulate with it. Check the ingredient list for bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine.

Is bemotrizinol better than avobenzone?

On photostability, clearly — avobenzone degrades substantially under UV unless stabilised, while bemotrizinol does not. They also cover slightly different parts of UVA, so many well-built formulas use complementary filters rather than treating it as a choice between the two.

Does bemotrizinol cause breakouts?

The filter itself is not considered comedogenic and is generally well tolerated. Whether a sunscreen breaks you out depends far more on the carrier — the oils, silicones and emollients that make up the texture — than on the UV filter.
